Ahhhhhh… It’s finally done! I have been dragging my feet for so long with remodeling the space where I spend the bulk of my time in the house… the office/sewing studio. I feel like I can call it a studio now because of how bright and airy it is. And, I can’t help but have visions of lots of cutting and sewing and major production!
I have to credit Christina from 2 Little Hooligans for inviting me to be a part of her Sewing Spaces tour to kick my butt in gear and update my office. I’ve been procrastinating for years, and my sewing has suffered for it. So, thanks Christina!
Here is my space before…
Cluttered. Dark. Unorganized. Furniture that didn’t make sense. Just a big mish mosh. I always felt like my creativity was stifled in here and would often resort to sewing in the dining room, where there was more room and light. Even though there are 4 large windows in the room, the dark hardwood floors and the honey colored cabinets just made it a bit dreary. And let’s face it; dated.
And then there was light!
We had the walls painted a lighter color (Baja from Behr) and the cabinets painted a crisp white. Wow, how it lightened up the space! I think the dark floors are perfect now too. We kept the dark wood shutters (I couldn’t justify replacing them…ouch) and I think I love them too! If everything was to be white, I think it would be overkill and besides; I am still getting over the last all-white phase of the 80’s.
I still haven’t found that perfect artwork for above the desk space yet, and I don’t want to settle on something that is mediocre, or that I don’t love….it might take a while;) In the meantime, I actually don’t mind the blank wall. It keeps things simple and clean.
This corner nook is strictly for sewing. I love the Ikea bookcases I got on clearance at the Burbank store! They were already pre assembled, which my hubby loved, but they were difficult to get into the car, which hubs did not love. But, like the trooper he is, he figured it out and we got them home. They are super sturdy and even house my serger on the bottom shelf.
I love having my office and sewing space combined. I can peruse pinterest, download and refer to PDF patterns, and watch movies – all while sewing! I HAD to replace the computer screen and keyboard and mouse to white… too much? I don’t think so! The lamps and shades are from Target. I searched high and low all over town and ended up finding them there… go figure.
I slipcovered the ottoman with Tula Pink’s Octo Garden in Coral and white ball fringe. I love how playful it is in the space, and is functional for extra seating too.
The white tables up against the window wall are also from Ikea; 3 total- plus a fourth acting as an island. The punks spend a ton of time in here with me and now they each have their own area to do homework, color, crafts, or just simply bug me 😉 I love how functional it is and it fits the space very well. It seems so grown up!
All the chairs are from Ikea too. They aren’t all that supportive so I made envelope pillows from this tutorial. They are quick and simple and can be easily made assembly-line style.
I got rid of a TON of fabric while remodeling. I can’t believe all that I had. Felt and fleece and shiny whatever, it all got donated. I just kept what I knew I would use or what I couldn’t part with.
All in all, I am over the moon about how it turned out and feel so inspired! I can’t wait to dig in and start using it.
I do have a huge closet in this room and it is totally destroyed right now, but my next project is to get that cleaned out and re-organized. I keep all my knits and notions in there, along with all the little punk’s craft paraphernalia. I’ll update that soon! Thanks for looking and I hope you are inspired 🙂
Until next time…
