We are Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' Flint Lockwood fans over here, and we can’t wait to see what he does in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (coming out in theaters, September 27)! He's quirky and awkward and maybe just a little bit Goth. His hair has a mass of spiky dreadlocks that move and shift with all of his wild antics
I made this costume from used and thrifted items around our house. It's pretty simple and the kids will love you recreating their favorite character for them!
I even made a version of Flint's can of Spray Shoes so my boy could carry that around come Halloween :)
A pair of old shoes
A can of Black Galaxy glitter blast spray paint
Remove the existing shoelaces from the old shoes and stuff some tissue into the shoes to protect the inside from the spray. Spray the shoes with an even coat of the glitter blast spray paint. Once dried, lace up the new black laces
Flint's Lab Coat
A mans XL white dress shirt
4 large oversized white buttons
Have your child put the shirt on inside out. Use pins to mark where your stitch line will be to take in the sizing. Down the arms, in the armpit area and down the side. Adjust as needed
Cut off all the excess fabric to remove the bulk
Measure where the sleeve should fall right at the wrist and add and inch. Cut off the sleeve at that measurement
Fold the sleeve up 1/2" and fold another 1/2" to enclose the cut edge.
Edge stitch at the bottom of the sleeve and again 1/2" away
To create an even bottom hem, turn the shirttails under. Edge stitch an 1/8" away from the bottom and again another 1/2" away
Remove all the buttons from the shirt
Since the buttons are just for show, space them out in a way that makes most sense. Mine ended up being 6.5" on center
1 fleece skull cap/beanie
1 synthetic beard in dark brown
Put the hat on and cut away the part that is covering the ears. You can sew the hat closed where you just cut so it doesn't separate, if needed
Start cutting locks off the beard. I cut it close the base and then cut the locks at the length I needed. That way I got two locks out of one cut. Place the lock where you want it on the hat and using your sewing machine, stitch in place.
Use smaller locks for the back and longer ones for the front. You can manipulate the hair once it is all finished
Let your boy look for something to invent, like Flint
Don't forget, you can use this lab coat model for any costume...a scientist, a doctor, you name it.
