Natalie's Polka Dot Birthday

I don’t know about you, but after every birthday party, these thoughts run through my head…

WHY DID I DO GO THROUGH ALL THIS TROUBLE?

natalies birthday 014
NEVER AGAIN

natalies birthday 1120
THEY DON’T NEED ANYTHING THIS ELABORATE

But then I look back at all the pictures and think…how can I not do this?  Plus, I think it’s a little like childbirth.  Once you get over the pain, you forget, and then want to do it all over again  :)
I got a ton of inspiration for this party from my Pinterest board.  Please take a look at all the awesome links for some wonderful ideas…

But, first things first…you may not know this but hubs is a musician and music producer…he wrote this song for our daughter for her birthday…it is so sweet and filled with “Natalie’isms” as we call them around here.  Listen while you look!

I created this in Photoshop, but I’m almost certain you could do it on Picnik.  Ordered it from Costco at 7pm and picked it up the next day!  It’s made of 20x30 poster board.   **Does anyone want a tutorial on this?  Or is it pretty self explanatory?  I never know…

Big, huge polka dots made from paper doilies hung from the trees

natalies birthday 042
Oilcloth Polka Dot tablecloths draped all the tables

I made Natalie’s dress using this fabric and this tutorial, minus the big bow.

I love how the big ol’ buttons made their own polka dots!

There was lots of kid talkin’…

…and big kid talkin’  :)

Polka dot cupcakes…

…and the original polka dot made an appearance

And…Polka dots on the cake!
Oy vei, the cake!  I used I am Baker’s Sugar Cookie Cake recipe.  It was pretty yummy, but the flavor developed best into the third day.  The bottom layer ended up sinking while baking and I wasn’t ABOUT to make another one, so I did what I could to prop it up.
It was a wee bit crooked… and by wee bit, I mean quite a bit, hence the offset, not straight-on picture  :)  Did the photo illusion work?

I made my dress too!  It’s the first time I have ever sewn (and completed) something for myself  :)    From this pattern.  LOVE!   **yes, post coming soon**  **There may be something in it for you too**

So worth it. . . your daughter is going to have such fond memories when she sees the photos from her party. She's a lucky girl to have you as a mom.

I always go big with my son's birthday parties and each year I swear never again. He has special needs and has recently been having health issues too. His 7th birthday is in three weeks and we're doing a carnival theme. I've already started on making the games. I think I try to make up for how hard everything else is for him by giving him a very special day. My daughter's 3rd birthday is 17 days later and it's less of an affair. She wants a gumble (bumble) bee party. At some point she'll have school friends too and get a more elaborate party. I'll be in trouble when that happens since their birthdays are so close together.

You know what, we go all out like that too! I don't regret it at all. Seeing those sweet faces in pictures and seeing Lucy light up when she talks about her parties reminds me I've made the right choice. You're little sweeitie's birthday looks incredible!

And I'm having my 40th b-day in a month with the same colors, I just did not find that oilcloth here!
