SYS ~ Strip Scrap Lampshade

Hey guys!  It’s me today and I have an easy, anthropolgie-esque type project.  I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one in an Anthroplogie store, but as I was making it, I could envision it in with all their quirky displays.

No kidding… this took me like 30 minutes.  The most time consuming was going to the thrift store and picking out the lampshade.  Let’s start there…

Look at this beaute.

When perusing for a lamp to buy for this project, pay attention to the shape.  I fell in love with the scalloped edges of this one!  Make sure it has vertical wires too, because the more to put scraps on, the better.

Once the shade is stripped of its covering, head over to your scraps

We’re looking for thin strips…selvedges come in handy here.  If you don’t have enough thin strips, just cut them down to about a 1/4”.

Just start anywhere you please and hot glue the first strip in place and start winding, making sure to overlap

When you get to the edge, hot glue down and start a new strip right next to it, again, overlapping.  Easy as pie!

Until your done!

Ooooh! I love this idea! So simple, but so fun. My husband would say it was hideous and then I would tell him he's hideous and put it somewhere he has to see it regularly until he admits its awesome.

I love this!! Definitely going to do this. (imagining all the ugly lampshades at Goodwill that I can repurpose!) I assume you could use this for a lampshade when it's done - or is it just decorative by itself? I don't want to "burn the house down" (so for the added 80's reference) but I'd love this on a lamp!

Also, you could easily add little stuffed animals to make it into a mobile. Check out Tamar Mogendorff's stuff for inspiration.

Great blog! Love the projects and easily to understand instructions! Keep up the wonderful work!

That is great! I am always trying to figure out what to do with those tiny fabric scraps.

Super cute and colorfully (not a real word?) effective! I've added her to a Pinterest board where I keep a collection of DIY lamps. I, too, like the simplicity of it.
