Today we have Shauna from the lovely blog Shwin & Shwin. She and her sister share the site and write up some great tutorials on sewing and even skin care! Today she has whipped up a few pillows for her daughter's soon-to-be-new room using scraps and a transfer technique!
Hello! I am Shauna from Shwin&Shwin where I blog with my sister. I mainly share sewing tutorials but I have a love of everything crafty. When Susan invited me to participate in the scrap your stash event I was exhilarated! I love me some scrap busting projects! (like this and this) For this challenge I knew just the project I wanted to do. We are in the processes of moving into a new home, one where my two kiddos can have their own room. This means the little girls room I have been planning for two years is about to become a reality. I thought I would start by making the little toss pillows for her bed. I wanted her room to have an eclectic, and whimsical feel. So using up scraps to piece together some pillows was perfect. I gathered up different scraps in a color pallet I wanted and a variety of textures and sizes.
Then to add a design to some of the pieces I used iron on transfer paper (like this) and I used some graphics from my favorite site HERE. I printed them out cut them out pretty close to the graphic.
Then put the graphic face down and iron it on.
Wait for it to cool completely then carefuly peel the paper backing off, if it is sticking to the paper in places just iron again, cool and peel away.
Then cut out all the fabric scraps to make the design you are going for.
Start with the small pieces and sew all of the pieces together until you have the front of the pillow all sewn together.
The last things I did before I sewed it to a back piece and stuffed it I added some buttons and embroidery. For the embroidery I simply wrote the words I wanted on the fabric. I used a permanent marker cause that's how I roll, but you can use a washable fabric pencil that washes right off. Then just use embroidery floss to stitch right over the writing.
Then to finish the pillow cut a back piece the same size as front and sew along the edges with the right sides together, leave an opening so you can turn the pillow right side out. Then fill with fluff and sew the opening closed.

For the second pillow:
(I had to charge the battery in the nice camera and so I switched to my little point and shoot I am sorry for the "grungy" looking pictures)
For the second pillow I wanted to use the scraps in a different way. I cut strips out on the bias (diagonal cut) Then I cut the strips up into smaller pieces. (cutting along the lines shown above)
Then you will have a pile of scraps all cut on the bias.
Sew them together to make one long strip. If you made them perfect (good for you) then everything will be even steven if you were like me they may be pretty uneven but that will get fixed later.(make sure you press the seams)
Then fold the strip in half with a cord inside the fold and sew a line right along the cord.
There you have it you made some pieced together piping. (my new favorite trim)
Then if it is uneven trim it up so it is all even.
Then pin the piping around a piece of fabric. (the piping should go toward the inside)
Clip the piping edge so it will go around the corner.
Then you have a lovely piped piece.
Piece together the rest of the pillow the same as the other pillow.
That's all there was to it! Two pieced together pillows that whittled down my scrap pile at least a little.
Thanks for having me Susan! Such a fun event with so many great ideas!
